The Maxwell Street Foundation works to preserve the legacy of the Maxwell Street Market, a little-known piece of Chicago history. Called the “Ellis Island of the Midwest,” the original market was a source of community and entrepreneurship for immigrants of nearly every cultural background, and at its peak it was one of the largest outdoor markets in the country. After surviving nearly a century, the market was eventually dismantled by UIC who bought the land around Maxwell Street to build student housing. The Foundation has collected hundreds of photographs and artifacts, and the site was designed to serve as a virtual archive and educational tool. The logo was inspired by intersecting street signs and architectural forms.
